Interview of Dr. Tamara Kreindel
Where is your home country and what is your professional background?
I was a pediatric radiologist and also taught histopathology, and most recently was the former chief of pediatric radiology at the Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires, Argentina
Why did you choose Radiology and Pediatric Imaging?
I chose radiology because it allowed me to interact with and learn from a wide variety of subspecialties. Radiology is like a separate language, which I enjoyed translating what I viewed in images into the context of a patient’s care. I chose pediatric radiology because I was fascinated by embryology, and it seemed logical to follow the consequential variations of embryology into neonatology and childhood.
What obstacles have you encountered as an international physician arriving in the United States?
The greatest challenge for me is the language, as I must process everything before I speak.
What experiences have helped you to acclimate?
I view this as an adventure; I love to travel and meet new people, cultures, and ideas. I spent three years after my residency working in France and spent time at Boston Children’s Hospital for a visiting fellowship. The diversity of Chicago and Hyde Park and the kindness and inclusiveness of the people at the University of Chicago have helped me transition.
